Where does the money go?
VBRC dues are $18 for professionals, of which $10 is paid to the state association. $6.50 of the student, para-professional, and retiree amount goes to support the work of the state organization. That leaves $8 and $3.50, respectively, for the work of our local council. Just what does the VBRC do with this money?
- hosts general membership meetings, the annual fall conference, and the annual spring banquet;
- prints the member newsletters and other materials;
- provides Teachers as Readers grants;
- supports the Virginia Reader’s Choice program;
- gives an annual scholarship to a deserving member;
- sponsors the Teenage Expectant Mothers project;
- recognizes a city Reading Teacher of the Year and all of the building nominees;
- recommends the city Teacher of the Year for the state award;
- names an Administrator of the Year and nominates him/her for the state award;
- honors a community organization or individual for exemplary literacy efforts;
- funds our major local service project called Catch ‘Em in the Cradle (information below);
- provides resources for various international projects, to further literacy throughout the world;
- and MORE!
As you can see, your money goes a long way towards promoting reading and literacy when you join VBRC! THANK YOU for your support!
VBRC’s Special Projects
Catch ‘Em in the Cradle – provides each baby born at Sentara Virginia Beach with his or her first board book. Parents receive information on the importance of reading to their newborns. Packets are assembled by the students at Princess Anne High School’s West Wing and are given to the parents as “take-home” gifts. Over 3,000 Virginia Beach newborns benefit from this project each year. The donations of our members are vital to the continued success of this effort.

International Projects – The International Reading Association sponsors numerous literacy efforts in developing countries throughout the world. These are aimed at teacher preparation and continuing education, stocking libraries, and providing books and school supplies for children. Teenage Expectant Mothers Project – VBRC sponsors “book showers” for the expectant teenagers at Princess Anne Center. The girls learn about the value of reading to their babies and receive several books and baby supplies for their little ones. For further information contact Tracie Hamilton at Kingston ES.
