The President's Message

Greetings From the President

Happy New Year!  The New Year brings exciting news for our Virginia Beach Reading Council.  We would like to recognize those individuals that recently received Reading Council Awards.  The James D. Mullins award is given to an administrator that exemifies exceptional support of reading in their school.

Janet Zitt, principal of Bayside Elementary was selected to represent our Virginia Beach Reading Council for 2008-2009.

Another enthusiastic person making headlines in the news is Mary Ellen Trivette; a third grade teacher from Indian Lakes Elementary School who was selected as Virginia Beach Reading Teacher of the Year 2008-2009.

We wish both of these ladies the very best as their applications were sent to the Virginia State Reading Association.

I hope that many of you were able to attend the fall Conference on November 17th.  The presenters were spectular and offered beneficial strategies to attendees.  I would like to thank Alice McKnight, President-Elect VBRC and the conference committee for their
thorough planning and attention to details to organize such a dynamic conference.  I am always amazed at the team effort that is delivered in high quality service.  Likewise, we are always thankful for the cafeteria staff and food preparation.   The chocolate cake is quite a high priority item.  We appreciate Dr. Cunningham, Principal of Larkspur Middle School for her continuous support of the facility usage.  Congratulations to all of the Reading Teachers of the Year that represented their buildings.  We look forward to honoring you at our Annual Spring Banquet in May.

Our next event is scheduled for Tuesday, February 5th at the Central Library titled “Every Child Ready to Read” at 6:30 p.m.

We hope that some of our VBRC members will register for the State Reading Conference to be held on Thursday, March 13- Saturday, March 15, 2008 in Richmond.  Please go to www.vsra.org to register.

Thank you for your continued commitment to the Virginia Beach Reading Council.

Warmest Regards,

Ginny O’Malley
President
